Tech Tips
The first tip I offer
is to keep a good supply of the tools you
most commonly use in a safe location in your V-dub..
This is a basic
breakdown of what I feel is important to have
Actually I keep almost every tool I own in the car for several
reasons, but for those "I didn't expect to become stranded"
trips..
- Synchro
tool (for tuning your carbuerators)
- several screwdrivers of both type
and all sizes
- several open end wrenches (especially
13, 17 & 10mm)
- fuel line (at least 6' or so)
- extra hose clamps for fuel line
- extra fuel filters
- the "How to keep your Volkswagen
Alive for the Compleat Idiot" manual
- ..or at least a cheat sheet of
important numbers such as gaps, torque & tolerances
O.K. You get the idea. Any of the
tools necessary for tuning the car or
tightening that self loosening (no extra charge) nut, etc.
The next item I cannot stress enough. If you are not one of the lucky
few to
have transferred to electronic ignition, get a dwell meter. (The
other fix would be to invest in electronic ignition. I had a very unfortunate
incident with the Pertronix ignition kit.) If the meter does not tell
you how to use it, the
"idiot manual" will.
The important thing
about the dwell meter (also located under "tach-dwell
meter in "the manual"is that even if you set your points
to the proper
0.016", the dwell meter may tell you that is not correct. Suggested
is
50 degrees plus or minus 2, which would be 25 plus or minus 1 on
an eight
cylinder scale. |
